What's behind a smile? There is a human being who has lived through sad, painful stories, but who also has dreams and believes in the beauty of life. Each person we meet is a world of their own and faces a unique battle. Some of these people are fighting for the basics. In the Vale Verde community, they are looking for happier days, to keep electricity, basic education and food on the table. And they dream of one day having running water in their homes.
And in the midst of dreams and battles, you can help bring more smiles by joining the movement as a local volunteer and donating to communities in need.
Lar do Jacaré
We rescue animals from the street, take them for veterinary care, shelter them, treat them for diseases and behavioral problems, castrate them, vaccinate them and select responsible guardians. Outside the perimeter of the shelter, we give educational talks about responsible guardianship in schools, create educational material, attend to reports of mistreatment, raise awareness street by street. In 2023 alone, we rescued 76 animals. 39 were given a family, we neutered 33 dogs and 139 cats. The shelter was created in 2021 out of the need to have a place to rehabilitate the animals we rescue from abuse. Rehabilitation often takes months before the rescued animals are fit to return to society. Lar do Jacaré is a space lent by Andreia Inácio and financed by Brigitte Caturano, and run by both of them on a daily basis.
Associação dos Remanescentes de Quilombola
The Associação dos Remanescentes de Quilombolas da Praia de Sibaúma plays an important role in preserving the rights and culture of the local quilombola community, located in Tibau do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte. Its activities include:
Fight for Land Regularization: The association is deeply involved in the fight for the demarcation of quilombola territory, a historic demand to guarantee legal security and the preservation of the traditional lands occupied by the SIBAÚMA QUILOMBO COMMUNITY.

Cultural Promotion and Education: The community promotes cultural events that include capoeira, traditional dances such as the zambê, and handicraft workshops that revive elements of African roots. These activities aim to strengthen cultural identity and engage young people in the community.
Social Action and Infrastructure: Recently, the association has discussed improvements to local infrastructure, such as access to the Katu River and lighting in public areas to encourage leisure and well-being in the community.
Sustainable handicrafts: There is local handicraft production using natural materials, such as coconut fibers, which serves as a source of income and a way of valuing regional resources and sustainability.
The association also collaborates with bodies such as the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office and INCRA to advance legal and social issues related to quilombolas, including historical reparations and the strengthening of public policies for traditional communities.
